We’ve come full circle. We’re usually the ones hacking, now IKEA decides to join in the fun.
“Hacking and DIY are trends that continue to grow. More and more people take creativity into their own hands, loving to remake and renew. And so do we at IKEA. The hackers are an inspiration to us, and with LYSKRAFT we feel it’s our time to show we got inspired by them,” says Michael Nikolic, Creative Leader at IKEA.
They’ve teamed up with Dutch designer-duo Scholten & Baijings to reimagine their most beloved classics — the KLIPPAN sofa and POÄNG armchair. The result is LYSKRAFT, a refreshing take on the old favourites.
The over 40-year old POÄNG gets a new ombré look in shades of yellow, orange and grey. While the POÄNG has seen many iterations over the years, this layered treatment is definitely giving the old armchair a fresh vibe.
Moving on to the KLIPPAN, the LYSKRAFT cover is a winner in my books. I love the vertical stripes, contrast stitching and how much more substantial the slipcover appears to be. One of my pet peeves about this affordable sofa is how the regular slipcover never stays in place and always looks a mess. But the LYSKRAFT looks thicker and hopefully, less likely to scrunch up. Finger crossed.
Scholten & Baijings also made the cutest legs for the KLIPPAN — a wood-carved decahedron in cheerful colours, a nice contrast to the subtle beige and dark grey covers.
Besides the hacks on the classics, the LYSKRAFT collection includes glassware and other serving pieces in the same artistic vibe.
Of course, this is not the first time IKEA dipped its toes into the world of hacking. Earlier this year, IKEA collaborated with Tom Dixon to produce the DELAKTIG, an open source platform for living. Essentially a metal base where you can create attachments like a laptop table or lamps to expand its function.
