How a Scandi sideboard became a Hamptons hero

We used IKEA’s BESTÅ system to create a floating Hamptons-style sideboard for my mother-in-law. We got quotes for custom cabinetry ($$$$) and decided to tackle it ourselves.

The project involved:

  • 5 x IKEA BESTÅ shelf unit (60 x 64 x 40 cm) + LAPPVIKEN door, white
  • 5 x IKEA Suspension rails
  • 5 x STYLKEA Styl-Panel 1118 in Mirror Silver Metal suitable for BESTÅ 60 x 64 storage units

STEP 1: We followed IKEA’s assembly and installation instructions for the BESTÅ units and suspended them from the wall using IKEA suspension rails.

STEP 2: We adhered STYLKEA panels to the doors. (STYLKEA is an Australian company that makes rigid peel-and-stick fretwork panels to suit IKEA furniture.) We tried two different designs for this project: a mirrored silver quartrefoil design and a Chinoiserie-inspired motif in white, which is the design we settled on.

STEP 3: We poured a glass of wine and admired the outcome, all for a fraction of the price of custom cabinetry!
