There’s always one thing to look forward to in August – the new IKEA catalogue. This year also marks IKEA’s 75th anniversary year – so there is an even bigger buzz about the 2019 IKEA catalogue than normal.
First, there’s no “theme” on the cover, like previous years. Rather, IKEA designed 7 homes, each with its own story to tell. The usual suspects, covering the most general styles, such as a small 52-square-foot apartment to an eco-friendly sustainable home, a multifunctional family home to an eclectic maximalist collector’s. I like the mesh of different styles, rather than just one dominant trend.
The other impression I got from browsing the online US edition, there’s less “here is what’s new” and more inspiration and demonstration of how IKEA products can come together to create the home of your dreams, no matter which style you lean into. I had a tough time spotting the new items and the 7 featured homes blended seamlessly with the product sections. But scouring the pages of the 2019 IKEA Catalogue, I did find a few favourites.
LANDSKRONA range. Previously only available in leather, the LANDSKRONA is given a new fabric version in light green. The tufting really comes through in this lighter colour.
LANGUR high chair with tray. This high chair features two L-shaped runners angled towards the chair’s backside instead of outward angled legs. You can easily remove the highchair seat shell to transform the highchair into a junior chair when your child is able to sit at the table without being secured.
VADHOLMA kitchen island with rack. For a compact kitchen, this is a perfect free-standing kitchen island. The add-on rack is optional and provides extra storage for pots and pans.
VADHOLMA wine rack. Continuing with the VADHOLMA series, the wine rack is a tasteful addition to any IKEA kitchen.
BJÖRKSNÄS collection. The BJÖRKSNÄS is as Scandinavian as it can get. Solid wood, light and airy, it’s well-crafted and a great fit for anyone looking to create a calm tranquil space.
FABRIKÖR glass cabinet. IKEA added another item to its classic pharmacy cabinet. This is a double door and comes in a delightful blue-black.
GAMLARED table. This is not new but I couldn’t bring myself to give this a miss. It would be my choice for a small dining nook.
GRÖNLID series. The GRÖNLID is relatively new and looks a bit like the EKTORP. It comes with so many combinations to suit any living room.
HATTEFJÄLL swivel chair. In blush pink it’s sweet beyond words.
SJÖPENNA floor lamp with LED bulb. Just the lamp to light up a corner, with a warm soft glow.
