Hi. I have this LEKSVIK chest of drawers which is ideal for storing lots of DVD movies/games and for holding Sky Box, Xbox and the TV sound bar.
Last month we moved to a new home and I decided to move away from the Shabby Chic cream and wood color to rustic/ industrial. Black metal, wood and copper.
I’m thinking to use the great hack with the Hyllis metal shelving unit or I could transform my 2 IVAR bookcases which already have a nice rustic wood stain. I would only need to saw them short and paint the sides in black. Easy Peasy.
But I love the LEKSVIK chest of drawers because of its great capacity to store ítems so I’m thinking how I could transform it into something more rustic/ industrial.
I’m thinking of painting black the sides and shelves borders, place some copper metal on the corners … and use a stencil of industrial words on the drawers …
I do not want to paint it totally in black (there’s a good hack with the LEKSVIK bookshelf to conceal the TV) because I have a Welsh dresser I converted 7 years ago from crap mahogany into a beautiful cream shabby chic. This Welsh dresser is going to become a gorgeous black one.
Also, I have an old trunk which I added industrial wheels recently and is going to lose its cream color to black and copper.
So I do not want to overpower the living room with too much black.
I live in Scotland.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions on turning the LEKSVIK chest of drawers a touch more industrial.

Hi Mel
Congratulations on the move. So much fun to start with a clean slate.
I think your plan to paint the sides and borders black is definitely in the right direction. Getting some sturdy copper handles will also add to the vibe. The current striped backing board needs to go too. You could replace that with mesh/ chicken wire or metal sheets.
Also, the LEKSVIK has quite a bit of curvy lines, which may not fit with the cleaner industrial lines. It’s a bit more work but I would sand them down.
Here a few industrial-type hacks to get you going.
Probably the most popular DIY industrial looking shelf – the VITTSJÖ. See the tutorial here.
Your plan may look somewhat like this two-toned HEMNES, with the sides and borders black, and drawers in wood.
Going on a less rustic, more industrial direction, you could also go very “metal”. See how this is done, using paint.
Good luck on the hack! And we’ll love to see the end result.
Jules
