I was taking a beginner’s weaving class and wanted to do something different than the usual table cloths. So I did a re-modelled version of the blue IKEA bag! The weaving took longer than needed, but that’s mostly due to my laziness.
The hardest part of the hack was the weaving. Some bits look a bit messed up (not shown on pics, of course :)) And you’ll also need to make sure that you have a sewing machine sturdy enough to sew through thick material. If I could do this again, I would probably pay more attention to the colours and design of the woven part.
But now that it’s done, I like the funky feel to it, besides it being a one-of-a-kind woven IKEA bag.

Steps to making a woven IKEA bag
Begin by cutting up the IKEA bag into a size/shape of your choice.
Pick out plastic bags and fabrics that you want to use for the middle section of the bag.
Start weaving the plastic bags and fabrics together.
Sew the woven parts together with the cutout IKEA bag bits. You’ll need a pretty good sewing machine for this. The top and bottom parts need to enfold the weave to create stability.
I added the IKEA logo to the sides. I cheated a bit and went to a professional seamstress to help me with this last part.
And the woven IKEA bag is done!

YPPERLIG – Yay or nay?
IKEA recently launched a new version of the FRAKTA bag — the YPPERLIG, in 6 colours — designed by Hay. Do you prefer it compared to the FRAKTA?

As soon as Anna-Mari saw the Signe rugs in IKEA, it lit a lamp in her head. This would make a cool and happy tote bag! See how she did it.
The first thing I asked Anna after she sent me her hacks was “Can I buy them?” It’s always been hard for me to resist pretty bags. See how she made these out of drawer mats.
