Hacking the KURA into a bunk bed with storage

We have a small house and our kids currently share a bedroom. We needed more storage space without adding more furniture to an already small room. This bunk bed with storage hack, from start to finish, was all accomplished in one day (approx. 5-6hrs).

I can’t believe IKEA doesn’t already make the KURA bunk bed this way. It seems there are so many people looking for something like this and they are so close with this bed. I like that the bottom bed is an actual bed frame and not just a mattress on the floor and of course, the under bed storage is a great addition to any small room.

The hardest parts were making sure the cuts on the legs were the correct length and making sure to secure the bunk to the base. The long front piece of wood could use a support beam.

One thing that I might still do is add a support beam in between the MALM drawers to support the base bed. Since you are removing the lower piece of wood to accommodate the under bed drawers.
