Drumroll! Presenting the top 10 IKEA hacks of 2017

Happy 2018! I’m looking forward to all (including all the amazing hacks) that 2018 will bring. What about you? Let me start by wishing you all things bright and beautiful for your home and life.

Before we get into the thick of 2018, let’s recap 2017. In a nutshell, in 2017 we had fewer “hardcore” hacks, if you know what I mean. Less deconstruction and turning it into something totally out of the world. More painting and makeovers, restyles and upgrades. Which I think is what the IKEA hacking movement as a whole (not just on IH) is going through at the moment. Nonetheless, it’s always good to see people putting their touch on IKEA and making it their own. That part never gets old.

So without further ado, here’s my list of the top 10 IKEA hacks of 2017, in no particular order. I hope you like them too. If I missed out your favourites, let me know in the comments.

IKEAhackers’ Top 10 IKEA Hacks of 2017

#1 These cats got it good

Calling it a litter box would be an insult to this almost palatial cat comfort room. Don and Michele poured their heart into hacking this comfort station their cats would love to go to. See more of the cat comfort station.

#2 Multi functional room divider

Eutropia Architettura designed a hardworking room divider for their client. It’s made out of STUVA cabinets and OSB and forms a nook for dining and storage, besides dividing the spaces. See more of the STUVA room divider and the rest of the space. room divider

#3 Classy vintage sideboard

Sure the EXPEDIT is discontinued. But it’s still making its rounds in the hacking realm. Here, Lena turns stock EXPEDIT into a beautiful blue sideboard. I’m sure none of her friends ever suspected it was an EXPEDIT in its past life. See how Lena hacked the blue sideboard.

#4 A very tall kitchen storage system

We’ve seen many RAST chest of drawers makeover but I’ve never seen it paired so successfully with a taller shelving unit. Christie puts 2 and 2 together and voilà! A very tall and slim storage system for her small kitchen. Useful and good looking at the same time! Read more about the tall kitchen storage system.Top 10 IKEA hacks of 2017 - tall kitchen storage

#5 Open and shut case for Raspberry Pi

Daniel wanted a case to store his Raspberry Pi while it wasn’t in use. He also wanted to keep it away from his toddler’s hands! As they say, necessity is the mother of invention. See more of the Raspberry Pi case.Top 10 IKEA hacks of 2017 - Raspberry Pi storage case

#6 Modern makeup table

One is good. Two is even better. Penny stacked 2 EKBY ALEX drawer units to double the storage, all within a slim stylish footprint. See how she hacked this modern makeup table.

#7 MCM vibes in this shelving unit

Another winning combo with the RAST. Grace paired shortened RAST chest of drawers with adjustable shelving units (similar to the ALGOT). The result:  affordable chic. See more of the mid century modern shelving unit.

#8 The incredible collapsible desk

Sam loves his desk. But he also loves his space. In fact, he loves his space a little more than his desk. That’s when he realized his desk takes up way too much space. So he began to brew the idea of a collapsible desk, which can be stowed away when not in use. See how the collapsible desk works.Top 10 IKEA hacks of 2017 - collapsible desk

#9 Now you see it, now you don’t

Bence came up with a brilliant way to store coffee capsules. GRUNDTAL rails held up against the top cabinet with a spring cylinder. Neatly stored out of sight, freeing precious countertop space. I know some people think coffee capsules are an eco-nightmare, but let’s focus on the merit of the hack. It’s pretty genius if you ask me. If not coffee capsules, adapt this idea for small bottles of spice or craft material like beads (obviously, not stored in the kitchen). I see lots of potential in this one. See more of the coffee capsule holder

#10 Blind them all

This year, Avital is the one to send in the forehead-slapping-why-didn’t-I-think-of-this-hack. SCHOTTIS shade cut to size to hide all the “non-pretty” things in the KALLAX. And so, so easy to do. If your KALLAX is always looking a mess, check out the KALLAX cover up.
