Living Room Updates, Major Sales, And What I’m Buying

Our living room is still in flux since we took Karl to the beach house and bought our new sofa (one new living room thing = me wanting to CHANGE ALL THE THINGS!), but I couldn’t wait to show you a few sneak peeks and share a ton of weekend home sales going on right now. We’re talking about $60 side tables and $119 living room chairs and kitchen stools for under $100, so let’s get into it.

The two cane-back living room chairs that we recently bought are on sale for 30% off (just $119 per chair plus you get an additional 15% off with the code TURKEY). They’re not too low (they’re around the same height as our sofa) and they’re very comfy if you add an accent pillow to the back so you have a bit more plushness and aren’t feeling as reclined. I also added a coat of Minwax Provincial stain to make them closer to the color of our kitchen stools.

Speaking of our kitchen stools, all of World Market’s furniture is 40% off with code FURNSALE, which means you can get our kitchen stools for less than $100 each! We’ve had them over a year and love them. No issues at all – in fact I’m debating them for the duplex… when we actually have kitchens in there.

But back to our new sofa, which we have been LOVING (it’s durable, kid/pet friendly, and comfy). Thanks to all of the weekend sales, it’s $400 off in the color we picked (“steel”) and it’s 50% off in the slightly darker “truffle” color, which is more of a warm charcoal in person than brown (the site pics don’t do it much justice – but this photo looks pretty close to its true tone). I’ll wait while you scream “$824 for a 93-inch Crate & Barrel sofa that is normally $1650?!?!” to no one in particular.

Anyone who follows us on Instagram has heard me obsessing (at length) over that deal because Crate & Barrel never has sales this steep, and  they’re just really comfy and well made and you can’t even get cheap bad sofas for that price most of the time. In fact, those are the arguments I used to convince John that we should get two of them for the duplex! The deal sealer was when Crate & Barrel said they could send them out to us next July instead of right now, which solves the whole where-do-we-store-two-sofas-while-we-fix-that-house-up issue.

That picture above shows how pretty those $119 cane backed chairs are from behind (me-ow!) and it also shows you the side tables we found for just $62 bucks!!! And remember, you can get an additional 15% off both with code TURKEY. We love that the side tables are big enough for lamps (those are old HomeGoods lamps on them), and you can also see my favorite little faux ginkgo leaf branch, which is also in the foyer (I got two of them). It’s on clearance for $6.97 right now and I love the happy vibe they add to a room, so for anyone else who was eying them, they probably won’t get any cheaper and might be gone soon.

But back to this picture for a sec. See that marble table between our cane back chairs? It’s the perfect size to slip into a bunch of situations, and SO CLASSIC thanks to the marble top and the perfect medium wood-toned legs, and it’s on sale for just $89.99 (plus you get an additional 15% off with the code TURKEY).

Under $100 for a marble table = jazz hands in my book. In fact, we liked it so much we bought another one for the beach house, so you can see how it can slip into so many different spots:

And this is what it looked like when it was living briefly as a living room side table (“my name is Sherry and I’m addicted to moving stuff around”).

The capiz chandelier in our foyer is part of Serena & Lily’s 25% off sale, just use the code EARLY25 at checkout to save about $75 and bring the price down to $225! It’s pretty rare to get more than 25% off at S&L (ask me how I know, because I stalk their site – ha!).

neutral foyer beachy capiz light gingko leaf

That same Serena & Lily 25% code can also save you almost $200 (!!!) on the 8 x 10′ rug we have in the front room at the beach house (it’s regularly $798, but with the sale it’s $598). It’s the softest outdoor rug we’ve ever stepped on – it literally feels like a chenille sweater – and we love that it can literally be hosed off and left outside to dry. Durable rugs = the jackpot. And that blue throw blanket is 20% off at Target, plus you can get an additional 15% off with code TURKEY.

Speaking of beach house bedrooms – this striped duvet set is 40% off, so it’s just $48 for the queen sized one. The 400-thread count sheets we got for the beach house are also 40% off ($20 off per set!) – we love these so much that we have them in our house too (and spending $29.99 for a queen sheet set – especially in the 400 thread count category – is pretty amazing). Even that bedside table is 10% off and the beach photography over the bed is on sale for $62. And again, the code TURKEY will save you an additional 15% on all four of those items.

The aqua kilim rug in our daughter’s room is on final sale at West Elm, so you can save $180 on the 8 x 10′ version. We’ve had ours for years, and have loved it (no issues with staining, wear & tear, or anything like that).

girls bedroom bookshelf toy chest storage

There are a couple of other items I’m stalking from Serena & Lily for the beach house (dang it if I don’t love everything they sell). Both the tasseled towel and the woven basket are marked down already plus there’s an extra 25% off with the code EARLY25: making these fringe-y towels and this striped woven basket even cheaper.

I’m also getting heart eyes for some things from West Elm, like this 50% off metal task lamp (just $29.99 and it comes in several finishes!) and the metallic throw pillow is just $14.99.

And if you need some fun tabletop and bookshelf items, this cheeky marble cell phone is marked down to $25 (it would be THE BEST conversation piece on a home office bookshelf or desk at work) and these chic striped marble vases are $20 off.

Over at Pottery Barn, they’ve got some great lighting sales – like this Moravian star pendant that’s similar to the one in our beach house, which is over $50 off (just $125!) and this sweet capiz flush mount that’s $75 off (just $175 and soooo perfect for a bathroom or hallway).

These faux silver dollar eucalyptus branches aren’t on sale yet, but I’m keeping an eye on them because they look so convincing! The pretty pink votive set is now $17 (down from $24)… for all THREE! I love the idea of them glowing on a table for a dinner party (not too tall that they’ll block faces) or on the mantel on a cozy winter night.

Wayfair has this well-reviewed neutral rug that every blogger and their mother is loving. We were heavily considering it for the beach house, and now it’s 10% off which makes it just $145 for an 8 x 10′ (that’s crazy cheap for such a big rug).

This pretty metallic art from Target (love that it comes pre-framed!) is less than $30 after the code TURKEY, which saves you an additional 15% off the marked down price. I haven’t seen it in person, but online Target stuff is so easy to return (you can just bring it to the store) so I might just go for it. That frame color is perfect, and I love the subtle blue, pink, and metallic tones going on for the beach house.

You can also get these sleek leather and wood chairs for nearly 50% off using the code TURKEY at Target, which makes them less than $100! Two of them in a living room with the round marble table we love between them would look so much more expensive than they are.

This glossy Martha Stewart casserole dish is super high rated, comes in a ton of colors and it’s more than 50% off. I love the white one for the beach house (imagine it on our pink stove) and the gray or the blue one looks perfect for our kitchen at home. Now if only I could cook…

This World Market armchair is 40% off with code FURNSALE, making it $140 less than the previous $349 price tag (just $200). The reviews are good, and the clean mid-century lines mean it can slip into a variety of rooms. It also has a pretty slatted back that would come in handy if you’re putting it somewhere that you’ll see the back of it.

And we can’t forget Small Business Saturday (also: support small businesses year-round!), so here are some of our favorite shops on Etsy (and beyond) with gorgeous hand-made wares! They’re not all on sale, but it’s AWESOME to have original art and hand-made pillows/ceramics/leather goods, in fact I was just telling John that two of the items on this list are in my “top ten things I’d grab in a fire”:

  1. We’ve been longtime fans of Claire Elsaesser (we have a print of hers in our bedroom, which you can see in the picture below).
  2. These leather pulls can instantly elevate any furniture item – picture them on a Malm dresser from Ikea giving it soooo much more swagger
  3. We are THE BIGGEST fans of Danielle Oakey’s Etsy shop. Not only did we buy two of her pillows for our new sofa, we also bought two more pillows for the beach house. They’re so well made, and no two are alike.
  4. I’m a bonafide Emily Jeffords groupie (we bought one of her prints years ago, and have loved watching her brand grow – she deserves every single eyeball and more). We currently have four different landscape prints of hers, and just can’t get over her talent.
  5. Handmade ceramics feel so special, and this dock/planter is full of function and beauty. How much prettier would the kitchen counter be with one of these instead of a long tangled charger cord?
  6. A Samantha French print was one of the first “real pieces of art” we ever purchased back in 2011 or so, and we LOVE her work to an insane degree. It’s hard to believe someone’s hand can paint this way, with so many light refractions and ripples. Gorgeous.
  7. You know me and tiny houses. I’m always IN. This cute little tea towel from Garbella is great for a kitchen or a bathroom (lately I’ve loved hanging a tea towel on a hook near the bathroom sink and calling it good). Casual and functional with a homemade twist.
  8. We purchased original prints from Joanne Ho of HeloBirdie around 7 months ago and they’re hung in our living room frame collage. I can’t tell you how many times I catch myself staring at them instead of at the TV. They’re hands down two things I’d grab in a fire without thinking twice. I love that they’re one of a kind original paintings, and they look so good in one of these gold frames from Target.
  9. I have had my eye on this Gwen Meyerson print for a while – I love the painterly strokes and you know I’m a sucker for a pink house.

Ok, I’m off to eat more and order some serious house stuff! Ha! But before I go, here’s a rundown of the sales & codes I’ve found so far:

  • Crate & Barrel – 15% off full price items with the code SAVE15 and up to 40% off 150+ furniture items
  • Target – Lots of markdowns with an additional 15% off everything with the code TURKEY
  • Pottery Barn – Free shipping with the code BLACKFRIDAY and tons of individually marked down items (25% off sofas!)
  • Serena & Lily – Save 25% off with the code EARLY25
  • Anthropologie – 30% off everything on their site
  • CB2 – 15% off every full price item (even furniture) with the code SAVE15
  • Minted –  20% off holiday cards, gifts, art, and home decor over $150 or 15% off everything with the code: BF2017
  • World Market – 40% off all furniture with the code FURNSALE
  • Rejuvenation – Up to 25% off, depending how much you spend
  • McGee & Co – 20% off everything with the code GIVETHANKS (love this intricate inlay frame and this little dark green & gold alarm clock)
  • West Elm – Up to 30% off and free shipping with the code SAVEMORE
  • Annie Selke – 25% off everything with the code CYBER17
  • Urban Outfitters – Buy one, get one 50% off
  • Old Navy – 50% off your entire purchase plus free shipping (no code necessary)
  • Banana Republic – 50% off all regular priced merchandise (no code necessary)
  • J. Crew – 40% off your purchase plus free shipping with the code THANKU
  • Gap – 50% off every single thing with the code BLKFRIDAY plus an extra 10% off that with the code JUST4YOU

Hope you guys are enjoying this holiday weekend with family and friends and all the pie! And feel free to tell me on Instagram or Facebook if there are any sales I’m missing. You know I love to soak them all up (picture me basting myself with them, turkey-style). Tis the season!

Psst – For paint color info & source links to nearly everything in our house, this page has got the goods for ya.

Giving Farmhouse Style to an old IKEA Dresser

Items Used:

MALM dresser
Photo: IKEA.com

My IKEA MALM Dresser was originally bought in a black color for my teenager’s room. But it was not working anymore. I was moving it to a new space and it was too overwhelming. So I decided to do something about it.

Here’s how I gave the black MALM dresser a white and wood farmhouse style:

1. Lightly sand the whole dresser.

Giving Farmhouse Style to an old IKEA Dresser

2. Add 3 coats of Chalky Finish Paint to the whole thing as a base color.

3. Seal the sides and drawers with Clear Wax.

4. Add a brownish color to the front and top.

5. Mix the multi sealer with the gel stain and apply to the top of the dresser and front only. The top should be done with the round brush in long strokes from one end to the other.

And now I have a new look which is more fitting for the smaller space the dresser is in.

A reminder of how it was before:

Hackers Help: HEMNES drawer fronts – sandable?

I am trying to re-create a hack that I saw online and am running into a problem.

Hackers Help: HEMNES drawer fronts - sandable?
Photo: IKEA.com

I would like to stain the drawer fronts on my new HEMNES dresser as I have seen done many times online but the drawer fronts on the HEMNES 8 drawer dresser I just purchased do not appear to be real wood. Am I missing something? Thanks!

***

Hi Jim

I’ve not looked at a HEMNES up close recently but I do believe they are still made of solid wood as stated on the site. Anyone touched a HEMNES lately? Perhaps you can enlighten Jim.

HEMNES has a thick coat of acrylic lacquer you’ll need to sand through to uncover the wood

For more staining tips, here is a post that may be helpful. Do report back should the HEMNES turn out to be non-solid wood. We are crossing our fingers and saying our prayers in hope that particleboard hasn’t infected the HEMNES.

KRALLAX – the toddler mid-sleeper bed

This is a KRITTER mid-sleeper bed and two KALLAX units underneath, the steps are made from BILLSÅSEN picture ledges. We used two green ledges which came from two separate packs but you could buy just one pack and use different coloured ones. We put DRÖNA storage boxes and FLARRA drawers under the bed to provide storage.

KRITTER mid-sleeper bed

Photo: IKEA.com

From IKEA we bought:

  • KRITTER mid-sleeper bed (had it for years)
  • 2 white KALLAX 2×2 units
  • 2 BILLSÅSEN picture ledge packs
  • 4 DRÖNA boxes
  • 2 FLARRA drawer inserts.

We needed a bed for our 7 year old that offered some storage but wouldn’t take up any more floor space than a toddler bed. She’s been in the KRITTER mid-sleeper bed for years and is no where near outgrowing it.

KRALLAX - the toddler mid-sleeper bed

Firstly, we cut off the legs of the KRITTER. We put masking tape over the legs to help prevent the white laminate being damaged as we sawed. We kept the legs to use later as a support for the steps.

Next we built the two KALLAX units. Resting the bed onto the two KALLAX we used L-shaped brackets to attach the inside of the bed frame to the top of the KALLAX.

KRALLAX - the toddler mid-sleeper bed

We then attached the BILLSÅSEN picture ledges onto the outside of on of the KALLAX units, following the instruction manual like a floating shelf. We then cut small lengths of the discarded legs and screwed them underneath the ledges to give extra support. Finally we screwed into the ledges from the inside of the KALLAX to make them really secure.

KRALLAX - the toddler mid-sleeper bed

I used some white paint to touch up the edges and give it a neater finish.

The ledges were really secure and she finds it really easy to get up and down.

I then sewed a cover for the bed head so that the KRITTER headboard pattern was covered up, just to give it a more grown up feel for my daughter.

How We Saved $1,350 On Our Beach House Appliances

I’d like to say we strategically planned to buy all of our beach house appliances (besides the pink stove, that is) during Black Friday sale season. But really, it was just some lucky timing. Timing so lucky that it saved us over $1350, in fact! The appliances won’t arrive until after Thanksgiving, but in case you wanted to snag some of the same deals, we’re sharing what we chose, how we saved, and why a last-minute floor plan change helped us get even more for less.

sconces / counters / cabinets / pendants / hood / stove / walls: SW White Heron / trim: SW Stone Isle

Let’s first talk about our change of plans. If you remember this post about planning our kitchen, we had been thinking about purchasing this fridge to go along the same wall as the stove. There were very few white fridges that fit the small area we had, so it was almost a given – but our gut told us to wait on purchasing it until the kitchen started to come together more.

It’s a good thing we did because as we started building cabinets, Sherry’s biggest fear about that fridge started to materialize, thanks to this cardboard mockup that we made out of our island stool boxes (I’m pretty sure if Serena & Lily made a refrigerator though, Sherry would want it – It’d probably be all inlay or capiz).

Anyways, the issue is hard to see in the photo above. Sure, it cramps the door molding a bit more than we’d like, but our main gripe was that it was such an obnoxious visual obstruction from this other view below – which would be seen every single time anyone walks into the room from the living room or the foyer. I’m sure part of the problem is that we’ve just grown accustomed to how open everything has been for months, but we (especially Sherry, who jokes that her tombstone could someday read “Lover Of Balance And Sight Lines”) weren’t loving how the future fridge would encroach on the view of the back door and the door to breakfast nook.

We considered moving the fridge to the back wall between the two doorways, but it was even more cramped looking back here. Sidenote: the plumber included a water line in his standard package, even though the fridge we were planning to buy didn’t have an ice maker, so that’s why you see that there.

So after much debate, we came to the conclusion that we shared in our last update: we’re gonna turn the breakfast nook into a walk-in pantry, and the fridge will go in there.

It’s hard to tell in photos, but you can kinda see in this one from a few weeks ago (before we had the light fixture correctly centered) that it would be a somewhat cramped breakfast nook. Even with just a placeholder table and chairs, it wasn’t very comfortable to move around in. Plus, with seating for 4 people at the island and 6-8 people at the dining table, it was starting to feel like overkill (keep in mind that this house will most likely sleep 8 people, and we’ll have already seating for 12 people without a breakfast nook).

The decision to turn that nook into a pantry immediately felt like a HUGE functional improvement to the first floor. We’ll have plenty more space for the dry goods that people bring to the beach (cereal boxes, bags of chips, those comically large barrels of pretzels, etc) plus we gain a spot for people to store their coolers. We’re also debating moving the microwave in there instead of having it in the island, which earns us one more deep drawer in the kitchen for more storage (we only have 8 kitchen cabinets, so we want to make the most of them). Plus we can fit a larger fridge in there too. All good things!

But I still was pretty insistent on using that sliver of wall space for refrigerating frequently used items. This means things like milk, OJ, eggs, etc can be within reach of the prep areas while the full-sized fridge will be just a few steps away in the pantry. That idea led us to this vintage-inspired mini-fridge from Amazon that jives well with our stove AND won’t visually interfere with any sight lines. Plus, it was MUCH cheaper than a lot of the other retro style fridges out there.

It arrived last week so we got to plug it in and everything (I had an ice cold Coke and it was glorious – sayonara Aquatober!). Don’t mind the big black hole in the wall below. We had to move the old fridge outlet lower to be hidden by the smaller fridge, so we still need to patch that. And of course baseboards are missing on both sides, so it’ll look a lot more finished eventually (still need to add a backsplash and our open shelves too).

But now let’s talk about the rest of the appliances. We still needed a washer & dryer for the mudroom, a dishwasher for the island, and that larger fridge for the pantry.  So we hit up Home Depot last week to hunt down some early Black Friday deals (oddly enough a ton of them are running already). We quickly zeroed in on this Maytag Bravos XL top-loading washer and electric dryer set.

Picking these was easy for a few reasons:

  1. We have plenty of room for a standard side-by-side washer and dryer set in the beach house mudroom, so we didn’t have to hunt down some weird size or finish.
  2. We have basically the same models in our own laundry room (ours are older and slightly smaller) and we’ve been VERY happy with them.
  3. They were super marked down! Both originally $899, but on “Special Buy” for $599 each.

We actually got HIGHER CAPACITY laundry appliances than what we have here at home for LESS MONEY (those were $799 marked down to $651). We figure the extra room (about 1 cubic foot each) will be helpful at a beach house since they’ll mainly be used for towels and bedding.

The dishwasher was a little more challenging to select because we wanted white (so it would blend in with the cabinets, leaving the pink stove as the only accent). But oddly enough, these days stainless steel is easier to come by and in some cases – including ours – the white was actually a bit more expensive than the stainless steel version, which still shocks me.

We landed on this Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher since we had a similar Frigidaire Gallery one in our last house. We liked the inconspicuous top-controls and the blends-right-in white toekick on this model (often those are black). It was $499 at Home Depot, but I realized in writing this post that it was $50 cheaper at both Lowe’s and Best Buy, so on our way out to the beach house this weekend, I ran into Home Depot and they price adjusted it to match, so we got it for $449!

Finding a fridge was the toughest part. The breakfast nook-turned-pantry is still a challenging room for a fridge because of the windows & doorway. Basically, we don’t have any wall that can accommodate a fridge any deeper than 28″ (most counter-depth fridges start around 30″). But after some hunting, we stumbled upon this “apartment-sized” refrigerator by Haier. We’d never heard of the brand, but it’s made by GE and has really good reviews. One person even said something like “we got this for our beach house and love it!” Pretty sure that’s a sign. Since it’s not going in the main kitchen area, we don’t mind that it’s not white. Plus, it’s marked down OVER $500, so a $1,200 fridge could be ours for $698!

The last bit of savings came from a special deal that Home Depot was running based on how many appliances you buy at a time. Basically, if you buy 2 appliances you save $50; if you buy 3 appliances you save $100; if you buy 4 appliances you save $200 (that’s us!), etc. And FYI, Lowe’s is running a nearly identical promotion this month. The only difference I can see is you get the money back in gift cards, not cash.

So for anyone who lost track along the way (which includes me), here’s a quick snapshot of what we got (fridge / washer / dryer / dishwasher) and what we saved:

$2,150 is still a big old chunk of change to drop (and that doesn’t include the pink stove, mini fridge, or microwave) but we feel really good about our final selections being brands we’ve already purchased and loved, or machines that have great ratings and should totally do the job for us (we’re looking at you, fridge!).

Oh, and speaking of spending money on things that are super functional but not always glamorous, we also hung blinds throughout the entire beach house on Saturday. They’re cordless white faux wood blinds (also from Home Depot – I was getting them cut while Sherry finalized our appliance checkout).

vanity / stool / towel / art / light / walls: SW White Heron / mirror: HomeGoods

They’re similar to the ones we installed here at home, except that they’re cordless (safer for young renters, plus they look even cleaner without those cords hanging down) so they just raise and lower just by pulling on the bottom. I can’t tell you how nice it was to shower in the bathroom for the first time without my “modesty cardboard” shoved in the windows.

floor tile / floor accent tile / marble table / tub color: SW Riverway / walls: SW White Heron

Quick tip for installing a boatload of blinds (we had 29 windows): tag team with one person unpacking and prepping them (snapping the rod in, removing the protective cardboard, etc) and the other person drilling and hanging. I also pre-drilled holes everywhere first so I wasn’t losing time switching my drill bits back-and-forth each time. It still took us about 3 hours, but it could’ve been much worse.

Anyways, Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We’ll give you guys an update after the appliances arrive next week, since we also owe you more about our other big plan-change in the kitchen.

P.S. To read more about how we restored this beach house over the last year, here are all the previous posts about everything from sharing the before shots and floor planning to getting drywall and mad-dash tiling three bathrooms. It’s been quite the ride, guys.
